“Chinese Public Overwhelmingly Backs Renewables Push” — Business Green

James Murray, Editor of Business Green magazine, published an encouraging story out of China today. A poll of 3000 residents in Chinese cities shows that the Chinese people overwhelmingly back renewables push, even if it costs more money.

The full story is definitely worth reading, but here are some quick highlights.

  • 90% of people in China are concerned about environmental pollution.
  • More than 96% believe ‘green power’ could help to tackle air pollution.
  • 92.6% support paying a premium on energy bills to secure cleaner energy sources.
  • New data from China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) revealed renewable energy accounted for nearly a quarter of China’s power generation last year, predominantly from hydropower.

Grain of salt: This is an encouraging story, but I will caution you that even though this survey was carried out by IPSOS, an independent surveying company, it was commissioned by Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, who clearly have much to gain from this survey’s overwhelmingly positive response. And the sample size of this survey was 3000, which even though is statistically significant, may have some implicit flaws in who and how were surveyed in the most populated country in the world.
