Did you know? Women make up 30 percent of the workforce in science and engineering occupations in the United States, even though women earned 57 percent of all bachelor’s degrees since the 1990s, according to a National Science Foundation 2017 special report.
What is the ESWN?
ESWN stands for Earth Science Womens Network. It’s a peer-to-peer network of 3000+ women scientists in over 60 countries. They lean on one another for professional coaching, informal mentoring, and career advice.
What is the Science-A-Thon?
Science-A-Thon is a one-day celebration of science and scientists. The goal of Science-A-Thon is to increase visibility of scientists and the important work they do. On July 13, participants will post 12 science photos over 12 hours on Twitter or Instagram. All proceeds will go to the Earth Science Women’s Network (ESWN), a non-profit organization supporting women in the Earth Sciences. Science-A-Thon is open to people of all genders, any field of science, professionals, students, and folks who want to be a “#ScientistForADay”. Learn more at scienceathon.org!
Why is this important?
Read these two stories. The first is an op-ed by Kirsty Duncan, Canada’s Minister of Science. It’s a must-read. The second is a short story on the ESWN by the WPR: Wisconsin Public Radio.
