The air quality in New Delhi, India right now is outright hazardous.

Every single resident of New Delhi today is breathing toxic pollutants — that’s 10 million people. 10 million people that will likely experience shortness of breath, eye irritation, skin rashes — and in the longer term, we are all at a very high risk for asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and possibly cancer.

This is a matter of life and death.

Did you know that 6.5 million people die every year because of air pollution? That’s one person dying needlessly every few seconds.

Air pollution is the #1 killer in the world — it causes more deaths than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and traffic accidents combined.

I believe that every human being has the inalienable right to breathe clean air. Is that too much to ask for?

In Delhi today — All 10 million people are dying a little bit. Unfortunately it’s about to get worse with Diwali.

Diwali

India’s largest festival Diwali is coming up on Sunday. Ironically we will collectively cover our city’s air with filthy chemicals and pollutants as we celebrate the victory of good over evil. There’s nothing good about a city where life expectancies of every single resident is reduced by 6 to 10 years simply because of the air they breathe.

Want to see the pollution data? The deadly PM2.5 particles in the air spike to extremely hazardous levels every year after 8pm on Diwali. This chart represents Diwali with those vertical lines from 2013 to 2016 so far.

The air quality in Delhi is about to get much worse with Diwali and the upcoming winter — but even today is hazardous.

During times of hazardous air quality the WHO cautions that “everyone may experience more serious health effects” and suggests “everyone should avoid all outdoor exertion.” Children under 12, the elderly, pregnant women and people who work outdoors are especially at risk.

Rest In Peace, Delhi.
