Residential building on the verge of collapse in Rani Bari, #Kathmandu after #Earthquake
A family in distress, as they scramble to get their belongings out of the house that’s structurally compromised. The earthquake didn’t impact everyone equally. Some felt it’s blow much harder than others.

Pravin Niroula had been in Nepal for only 8 days when the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit. He is visiting his hometown, Kathmandu, while on vacation from his job in Stratford, UK, along with his wife.

The 7.8 earthquake was especially cruel to the house Pravin’s mother-in-law was renting in Rani Bari, Kathmandu.

The 4 story building is on the verge of collapsing onto itself, and threatening the house on the left too:

Pravin not only helped his mother-in-law evacuate all of her belongings out of her flat, but also helped the 3 other families living here. He is soft-spoken, has a distinct British accent, and is grateful that everyone in the house was remarkably unhurt.

Pravin is bruised up, banged up and hurting after spending 2 full days moving everything out of the house.

More heroes (family friends) helping them evacuate the entire house, despite the visible lack of structural integrity:

Pravin told me that he doesn’t know whether his 2 months stay in Nepal will be enough to get his affairs in order for his mother-in-law, and his own parents in Kathmandu. Just like Pravin, there are many other heroic stories of everyday people across helping one another, and making the best of a difficult situation.

Although the vast majority of houses in the Kathmandu valley were spared any damage, there are some stories like Pravin’s that show us that the road ahead to a full recovery will be long and difficult one.
